The Delhi government will start installing 1.4 lakh CCTVs cameras — 2,000 in each assembly constituency — within three months, principal secretary of the Public Works Department (PWD), Manoj Parida, said on Saturday.
Parida — who is heading a committee appointed by lieutenant governor (L-G) Anil Baijal to prepare a framework for the installation of CCTV cameras — said the committee had no objection over the government’s standard operating procedure (SOP) on installing CCTVs at residential and commercial places, except for areas neighbouring high security areas.
“Most of the formalities are complete. The order for the purchase of cameras is likely to be placed after the meeting of the work advisory board, scheduled to be held next week. Installation of cameras will begin in three months,” said Parida.
He also maintained there was no tussle between the L-G’s office and the government over the issue and the CCTV project will not be stopped.
he project had been a bone of contention between the government and the L-G’s office after Baijal formed the committee. The AAP government had strongly objected to the formation of the committee and had accused the L-G office of stalling the project.
When Baijal constituted the panel, Kejriwal, his cabinet colleagues and other AAP MLAs had marched to the L-G’s office, demanding that the panel be dissolved. In July, the chief minister had torn the draft report of the panel, which, he said, talked of taking permission from the police before installing the CCTV cameras.
Parida, who is also the additional chief secretary (home), said, “The panel formed by the L-G never acted as a barrier to the CCTV project. We were only concerned about control of data to avoid its misuse. The committee has received government’s SOP on the project and is looking into it. The process of installing CCTV cameras will continue as there is no blockage on part of the L-G on the matter.”
